Blake Bortles retires

The No. 3 overall pick of the 2014 draft, Bortles started 73 career games for the Jaguars. He was the signal-caller for Jacksonville when the club went 10-6 in 2017 and reached the AFC Championship Game.

But after compiling a 3-9 record as a starter the next season, the Jaguars elected to move on and release Bortles.

He threw for 17,646 yards with 103 touchdowns and 75 interceptions in his five seasons with Jacksonville. He’s second on the franchise list in yards, touchdowns, and interceptions to Mark Brunell.

Bortles, 30, also spent time with the Rams, Broncos, Packers, and Saints after his tenure with Jacksonville ended.

This obviously begs the question – HOF?

Pretty inevitable given the last few seasons where he couldn’t stick to anyone’s roster. He has made some nice money and should be set for life.

When you’re franchise passing leaders are Mark Burrell and Blake Bortlee, you know you’re not going to have a good time. That sums up the Jags ineptitude the last 30 years.

Mark Brunell was a VERY good QB.

All your post summed up was that you never saw him play.

It’s weird that Blaine Gabbert is still collecting a paycheck in the NFL, but Bortles can’t even find a backup job.

He was “overdrafted” as a #3 overall pick – which set expectations too high. Coaches then said he would sit for his entire rookie season to learn – but was thrown in during 3rd game of the year.
Had the misfortune of playing for Gus Bradley – worst head coach I have ever seen.

But dude caught FIRE down the stretch of that 2017 season and looked like an All Pro. I was hoping he got over the hump to become a bigtime qb but it didnt happen.
I wish him well!

I’ve never seen a team go from being minutes away from winning a conference Title, to being at the absolute bottom of the League so quickly.

—————–

There are franchises that have been around longer than the Jags and still haven’t had a QB as good as Mark Brunell. Guy would be a HOFer had been on the right franchise.

I suppose when a team, say like the patriots, aren’t interested in signing you as the backup to the backup to the backup, it’s time to hang ’em up.

Statistics don’t tell a great story with Bortles, there’s no statistic to show bad decision making. You needed to watch the games to understand Blake.

He has high yardage because he was putting the Jaguars in holes constantly with early interceptions, fumbles, and just terrible play. He’d wrack up garbage time statistics like nobody else as they tried to claw back, as defenses dropped back and played less aggressively. How many of those 100 touchdowns came when a game was out of hand? Plenty. That 2017 AFC Championship appearance was because of the defense.

Anyone talking like he should still be in the league are welcome to talk their team into making him a backup. He was on 5 teams before the age of 30 for a reason.

Bortles is retiring with a higher qbr than Marino, Elway, Aikman, Bradshaw, Cunningham, Moon, Fouts, Kelly, both Simms’, and Eli & Archie Manning.

If Bortles doesn’t go into Canton on the first ballot there shouldn’t even be a HoF.

Don’t really have a dog in the hunt.. but just for the sake of conversation;

They were 5th in scoring.. and hung 45 on the Steelers at Heinz Field in the Divisional Round..

Over drafted? Yes, but he had some nice moments and almost got the Jags to the Super Bowl. It was a nice but brief ride for Bortles. There are plenty of worse qb’s you can cherry pick from than him. I remember an incident when he was at a party and caught a thief trying to either steal something in a car in the driveway or the car itself. Bortles restrained the guy until police got there. He had a super hot gf from college too that he dumped sometime during his rookie year. Idk, just random things that the melon has stashed away under the BB file. I hope he was wise with his money and has a great time in retirement. Wish him all the best.

Not bad.

Plus he gets a pension of over 50K when he reaches age 50. (I think its 50, not 55)

He may not have lived up to expectations but he has a better career than half of the QBs drafted in the top ten. It a crap shoot.

Bortles, Gabbard – same guy. If Bortles is considered HOF material, it’s time for Canton to close down. In fact, if Brett Favre is not removed, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has lost all credibility.

He got more of a career than his talent warranted and almost got Doug Marrone into a Superbowl. Not bad for a middle of the road player
