The concept for the shirt was conceived by Wally Ross, who served as the president of Hard Sails and Seaboard Marine from 1954 to 1974, and his assistant Dick Curry. The pair starting peddling the tees during Cowes Week, when many sailmakers would set up temporary shops for sailors at the regatta to have their racing sails re-cut or repaired. Hard Sails thought these funny graphic tees would be a humorous addition to their services, and many yacht enthusiasts remember seeing them worn during the early days of the Admiral’s Cup in Cowes.

Despite the musician’s injury, Kirkwood was responsible for the Out My Way cover art pictured on this tee.
